Shopify vs Etsy: Which Platform is More Profitable in 2025?

The E-commerce Dilemma

Choosing between Shopify and Etsy is the first major hurdle for online sellers. The choice dictates not just your store's look, but your underlying unit economics.

Monthly Fees and Transaction Costs

Shopify: The Basic plan starts at $39/month. Transaction fees are generally lower (2.9% + $0.30 via Shopify Payments, with 0% extra transaction fee). If you use a third-party gateway, there's a 2% penalty.

Etsy: There are no mandatory monthly fees. However, you pay a $0.20 listing fee per item. Transaction fees are higher at 6.5%, plus payment processing (3% + $0.25).

Traffic Acquisition: Renting vs. Building

Etsy is a marketplace. It has millions of active buyers searching for products. You are paying higher fees in exchange for access to this built-in traffic.

Shopify is an island. You have to build the roads to it. This means paying for Facebook/Google Ads, investing heavily in SEO, or driving traffic via social media. The customer acquisition cost (CAC) on Shopify is entirely your responsibility.

Ideal Seller Profiles

Etsy is best for: Beginners, sellers with zero marketing budget, niche handmade or vintage goods, and those who want to validate product ideas quickly.

Shopify is best for: Established brands, sellers scaling beyond $5k/month, dropshippers, and those who want full control over the customer experience and email list.

The Hybrid Strategy

Many successful sellers use a hybrid approach. They use Etsy for customer acquisition (since Etsy brings the traffic) and include a card in the package offering a 15% discount if they reorder from the Shopify store. This transitions the customer from a high-fee platform to a high-control platform.

Cost Comparison Example: $50,000 Annual Revenue

Assuming 1,000 orders of $50 each.

Etsy Costs:

  • Listings (assuming 100 active): ~$60/year
  • Transaction fees (6.5%): $3,250
  • Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $1,750
  • Total platform fees: ~$5,060 (plus any Offsite Ads).

Shopify Costs:

  • Monthly subscription ($39 * 12): $468
  • Payment processing (2.9% + $0.30): $1,750
  • Total platform fees: $2,218.

Shopify appears much cheaper, but this ignores the ad spend required to generate that $50,000. If your ROAS is 4x, you spent $12,500 on ads to get those sales on Shopify!
